We recently did a folded paper duck and ducklings craft and since then I’ve been really wanting to do a play and learning activity with them. They are so cute and easy to make! You can simply color them, paint them, use feathers or other mixed media do decorate, draw eyes, or use googly eyes – there are so many ways to make them unique!
This week is Nursery Rhyme week with the Virtual Book Club For Kids, and we chose Five Little Ducks. It’s always been a favorite around our house ever since we found the songs on youtube. You can also find multiple versions in book form:
Five Little Ducks Retelling and Counting Activity:
To make your ducks, you’ll need the free duck and ducklings template to make some ducks:
- Mommy Duck and five ducklings
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
How to prepare the Five Little Ducks Story Retelling Activity:
First, we made our mommy duck and five little ducklings. This time we decided to keep it simple and use crayons and markers.
Next I drew a pond, some hills, and some grass, and then colored it and cut out out.
Be sure to use card stock to make these so that they will be sturdy enough to stand. When cutting out the hills and grass, leave an inch or two at the bottom to fold under as the stand.
Note above how I left about an inch below the hills and grass. I folded that part under to make them stand up.
Playing and learning with the five little ducks:
After making the ducks and scenery, it was time to play! We have this rhyme memorized because it’s a favorite, but it may be helpful to have the book there while you play.
We started with all of the ducks in the pond.
Just as the story goes, we counted and moved the corresponding number of ducks over the hills, subtracting one, and moving that number back.
Here’s our Five Little Ducks going out one day! But after Mommy Duck said, “Quack, Quack, Quack”, only 4 of the ducks came back! So we left one over the hills, and returned 4 to the pond.
We continued with the story until only one duck came back. But then the last little duck went out to play over the hills and no little ducks came back!
Finally, after there were no more little ducks, Mommy Duck called, and they all came back. Yay! All five little ducklings back with mommy duck in the pond.
